Review Policy

Thank you so much for considering to send me a book to review!

Truly, it means a lot to me that having me review a title is something you might be interested in, or are already considering. Please continue reading for all the details of my review policy.

Overview and Background

It is important to specify that blogging and reviewing are something I do in my spare time. I have a full-time job at my local library, and work with several publishers through their blogger and influencer programs, so a fair portion of my life is already taken up by reading. As well, I do have a life outside of my job and my many hobbies (blogging included). That said, I put hours of care into the reviews and content I create for my blog, and take pride in doing so.

As a result, I have quickly had to become selective about the titles I accept to review. I will do my absolute best to respond to all requests in a timely manner. Please do not be offended if I decline to review a title.

What Will I Read?

My tastes are fairly varied, but I primarily read and review Young Adult fiction (particularly because this is the collection I specialize in and oversee at the library). I will happily consider requests to review Adult, Middle Grade, or Children’s Picture Book titles.

Across target demographics, I will read and review the following genres:

  • fantasy and speculative fiction
  • science fiction and dystopian
  • contemporary fiction
  • romance

For non-fiction, I almost exclusively read only autopathographies, or memoirs that focus on chronic illness and/or disability.

I also enjoy fiction in non-prose format such as graphic novels, comics, or novels-in-verse. If a title features diverse characters, or if a work features #ownvoices representation, all the better.

I am an #ownvoices reviewer for queer (bisexual, nonbinary), anxiety, and chronic illness/disability (endometriosis) representation. If your title includes any of these elements, I would love the opportunity to read it!

What Will I NOT Read?

I am not the right reviewer for historical fiction, mystery/thriller, or horror. The exception is if it plays a secondary role in a novel of another genre (ex. the way that horror elements feature in Wilder Girls, or how a historical setting is used in A Great and Terrible Beauty or The Infernal Devices trilogy).

What Formats Do I Accept?

I will gladly accept physical or digital review copies. For digital copies, I prefer to read on my iPad, so a format I can open in iBooks or my Kindle app (ePub or PDF) is best. Physical copies are preferred for purposes of exposure in Instagram posts, and because extended periods of screen reading can trigger my chronic migraines.

Requests: What to Include

Please include the following information when reaching out to me regarding a review request. It will help me make decisions easily, and save us both time!

  • date of release
  • synopsis or summary
  • other information you feel is important
  • specific time frame or deadline for posting

The last one is extremely important as I’m always juggling several review copies at any given time, and prefer not to overwhelm myself.

Please also let me know if my review will be part of a Blog Tour, or if there is additional content you are interested like beyond the review itself such as giveaways, interviews, or creative content (graphic quotes, art, etc.).

I’ve Accepted Your Request! Now What?

Depending on the format, or where a physical copy is coming from it may take some time for the book to get to me. While I do my best to read all review copies I receive in a timely manner, I cannot guarantee an immediate turnaround—especially for backlist titles.

For backlist titles, please inform me when you would like the review posted when submitting your initial request. For upcoming titles, I do my best to ensure reviews are posted between 1-2 weeks prior to the book’s release. If that is not possible, reviews will always be posted within one week of release. I include purchase links for several retailers in all of my reviews, and will include pre-order incentives, if applicable, when reviews go up before release.

If you desire a different posting time frame, please inform me accordingly upon initial request.

All reviews will be cross-posted. I share more succinct versions of the full review from my blog on other platforms. These include Goodreads, Indigo, and Amazon. If you would like my review posted on another website, please let me know.

Gentle Reminders:

My reviews will always, and only ever, reflect my honest opinions about the books I read. This in non-negotiable. However, I consider myself to always be fair when writing “negative” reviews. I strive to keep my reviews as respectful as possible, even when discussing a book that didn’t work for me. I will always include any positive elements, and never outright dissuade potential readers from reading a book (unless the issues a book has are irredeemably problematic). My reviews are never directed at the author personally. If I write a negative review of your book, this does not give you permission to respond to my review negatively.

Please be aware that by sending me a book to read or review, there will always be the possibility of receiving a negative review. If this is not something you are comfortable with, please do not offer to send it to me for review.

I will not accept payment in exchange for writing a positive review.
